Locations/scenes

Source : The Compleat Sean Bean.

Locations:
Three scenes for Root of All Evil were shot at Chicago's O'Hare Airport on Friday, Sept 14.

The first had Sean walking through one of the terminals, having just arrived on a plane. Much attention was given to an unusual-looking silver carrying case (rumor has it that it will contain a large amount of money that will at some point be lost), and to his very interesting boots.

The second scene featured Sean's character renting a car at the Ace Rent
A Car desk. The clerk was comedian Josh Blue (www.joshblue.com) and he looked exactly as he looks on his website. Sean's character did not crack any smile at all as Josh went into a silly routine struggling with the computer keyboard and paperwork, playing up his cerebral palsy (with a sign on the wall saying "We hire the handicapped").
The director was grinning during the takes.
As Sean's character turns away from Josh, Josh gives him a cruel "mean face" before he cheerily greets his next customer.

The third scene was shot in the parking lot, with Sean approaching a car.

Mort Rainey lives in Chigaco. Now right on the other side of the street they were filming a scene from The Root of All Evil. Sean and Mike Starr are in this one. Mort made a video and took pictures. He gave me his very nice permission to show them here !

Sean Bean is doing a movie for which he is perfectly suited. Or at least the title is now perfectly suited for him. According to Moviehole the film, which was formerly titled Cache, has been retitled as The Root of All Evil.

If you don’t know why that’s appropriate for a Sean Bean movie, then you have no idea who Sean Bean is. If there’s a movie with a bad guy in it, there’s usually a good chance Sean Bean will be the actor playing him. Even in Lord of the Rings where he played Boromir, while Bean’s character ultimately sacrifices himself to save others, he’s a dark and brooding anti-hero who only does the right thing after spending most of Fellowship of the Ring sneering and plotting to steal the One Ring. Sean Bean is a bad dude, and no matter what the movie’s about The Root of All Evil is the perfect place for him.

MH actually has a few details on the plot of the film, which is being directed by Stephen Milburn Anderson. They say the film is a psychological thriller which examines the not so pretty truths about human nature. No word on who Bean will play in the movie, but you get bet you’re ass he’ll be somebody bad. Root of All Evil

Previously on Filmstalker I wrote about Sean Bean's new film The Cache and we had the barest of plot outlines at the time. Now though there's a much bigger plot appeared and it sounds fascinating the film also gets a title rename as it is now called The Root of all Evil.

It seems that the plot is going to give Sean Bean a lot more to get his teeth into, it's not just the standard bad boy role that he so often gets from Hollywood, after all he looks rough and rugged, has a great sneer and carries an English accent, perfect for a bad guy. Sigh.

The outline from Moviehole tells us much more about the plot, and reveals that it may be based on one of the most important and influencial social experiments of our time:

“...a psychological thriller which examines three stark and not so flattering truths about human nature -- Man’s cowardice versus his courage, women’s sexual attraction to “bad boys”, and the morality of money. These truths are woven into a thematic overview inspired by a 1961-62 Yale University obedience experiment by Dr. Stanley Milgram which proved the ease with which human beings shuck all personal responsibility for heinous acts or crimes while under the influence of an outside authority.”

Wow! Tell me that isn't intriguing. There's a lot more there than at first thought, and so this could mark a rather interesting role for Bean.

It seems there's rather a large crowd out there that thinks Sean Bean often gets the short end of the casting stick, and I just hope that at some point casting agents listen. Maybe they already have?

We already heard that Steve Anderson is set to direct this story, and a little digging into Dr. Stanley Milgram tells us that his controversial experiments into obedience were used to explain the events of the My Lai Massacre, a film that Oliver Stone will be making, as well as discussed in relation to the trials of various Nazi officials.

Milgram's experiment is the famous one for obedience, where an instructor and “teacher” subject are in one room and a “learner” subject (an actor) is hidden away in the adjacent room. The teacher asks the learner questions and when they get one wrong the teacher is told to administer an electric shock using a scaled panel, each time increasing the scale.

The teacher can hear the pain from the learner in the room and this increases according to the scale of the shock administered. If they pause or stop the instructor tells them they must continue.

The surprising results were that most people did, and half even went to delivering a full 450-volt shock three times in succession.

What's also interesting is that the idea of six degrees of separation comes from one of Milgram's experiments too. He tracked chains of acquaintances in the U.S. Using parcels and a letter telling the recipient who the parcel was intended for, they were to forward it to someone who was more likely to know the target person than they were.

A fascinating story indeed, so how far is the film going to delve into this area, or is it just going to use it to describe the plot? I would really like to see something a lot deeper and meatier for Bean to play, perhaps this could be it?

London, Aug 31 (IANS) Sean Bean, star of the “Lord of the Rings”, has filmed a nude scene in minus 40 degrees temperature for his new movie “Far North”.

Bean stars as a fugitive in the Arctic who is given shelter by two tribeswomen who fight over him, reports dailysnack.com. British director Asif Kapadia has directed the film and shot on location between Norway and the North Pole.

Kapadia said: “We were shooting out of one of the northernmost settlements in the world. We needed armed protection everywhere we went in case we came across a hungry polar bear. The unit lived in a Russian icebreaker, which travelled overnight to each new location as we slept.

“At times the temperature dropped to minus 40 degrees. Getting ready to go on set involved a good hour to get dressed - putting on the thermal layers, waterproof layers, layers of socks, boots, gloves, hats and life jackets.”

Speaking of the nude scene, he said: “We awoke to find the first snow of the winter had fallen. We had discussed the idea of Sean doing this scene naked, but now the time arrived. Sean knew it was right for the character and the scene, so without too much pressure he did it - twice!”

Sean Bean is The Root of All Evil

I’ve been a big fan of Sean Bean for a very long time now. The first time I remember seeing him was when he played the bad guy in Goldeneye, where he was a nice mirror to Pierce Brosnan’s new Bond and I enjoyed the almost ying/yang chemistry they had there. His Alec Treleyan was one of the more complex Bond villains we had seen in years and a total breathe of fresh air to the franchise.

Being predominately a British television actor in the 90’s with his series Sharpe he was constantly on my television screen and I came to really admire his acting ability. He had a great likability factor but always with a hidden depth of darkness, which Peter Jackson brought out well in his Lord of the Rings trilogy, no doubt the finest moments of Bean’s career.

I thought he would become a huge star after the exposure of Rings, but he hasn’t really. Yeah he’s constantly working in Hollywood but he is restricted to leading thrillers which barely open in the top five at the box office or type-cast in villain roles in things like The Island and National Treasure. Not quite the leading man roles I was expecting.

Nevertheless, as long as he’s working it’s all good. The latest movie he has signed up for is The Root of All Evil, a psychological thriller examining the truth depths of human nature and how far we can all be pushed into terrible acts of crime and violence when influenced by an outside authority.

Stephen Milburn Anderson has written and will direct the film. Anderson won critical acclaim for his movie South Central 15 years ago but has sparsely worked in Hollywood since despite many claiming him to be a hot prodigy in the early 90’s and as Moviehole point out… he was put in the same breathe as Quentin Tarantino.

The Cache renamed The Root of All Evil

Sean Bean is The Root of All Evil
Date : September 1, 2007     Posted By : Clint Morris

A couple of weeks ago Kirby mentioned a new film Sean Bean is doing called "The Cache" - today we scored a little more information on the movie, including word on it's new title.

“Root of All Evil” - previously known as "The Cache" - is a psychological thriller which examines three stark and not so flattering truths about human nature -- Man’s cowardice versus his courage, women’s sexual attraction to “bad boys”, and the morality of money. These truths are woven into a thematic overview inspired by a 1961-62 Yale University obedience experiment by Dr. Stanley Milgram which proved the ease with which human beings shuck all personal responsibility for heinous acts or crimes while under the influence of an outside authority.

The film will be directed by Stephen Milburn Anderson. Anderson hit the scene with his critically acclaimed debut film ''South Central'' (produced by Oliver Stone – Warner Bros. 1992). You'll recall Janet Maslin of The New York Times considered Anderson along with Tarantino and Tim Robbins among the hottest young up and coming directors in the mid-90s. Anderson also penned the script.

Bean opens The Cache

Sean Bean has become the villain of the new millennium. It used to be you went to guys like Alan Rickman or Jeremy Irons if you wanted a good, nefarious bad guy, but Bean really has replaced them in recent years with pictures like The Hitcher, National Treasure, and, of course, GoldenEye. An interesting career for an actor who is best known in other countries for his hero, Richard Sharpe

Moviehole is reporting that Bean is about to add another villainous role to that list of do-badders. He is apparently slated to take the lead in The Cache which is “a revenge thriller about a man who involuntarily brings a couple of kids into his unlawful operations.” As the site points out, it does sound an awful lot like another Hitcher movie, just with a different title.

Chris Hemsworth and Victoria Profeta are slated to co-star, most likely as the “kids,” although they aren’t exactly young pups. Both actors only have a few roles under their belts, although Hemsworth was nominated for his “Home and Away” role for the Silver Logie. Steve Anderson, the director behind Fuck and The Big Empty will direct.

'Barne' tells us that former Bond villain cum Hitcher, Sean Bean, will star in “The Cache”, "a revenge thriller about a man who involuntarily brings a couple of kids into his unlawful operations" (so it's the "Hitcher 2", right?).

Australian actor Chris Hemsworth (“Kidnapped”) and Victoria Profeta (“The Drew Carey Show”) co-star in the movie.

Steve Anderson, director of the forgettable Jon Favreau/Rachel Leigh Cook comedy “The Big Empty”, has signed on to direct.
